interesting debate

It seems to me that revolutionary movements, such as New Urbanism, eventually become highly  orthodox and as a result spend most of their time defending the faith and burning heretics. First generation Modernism was no different, but after surviving Post-Modernism, it emerged as a "big tent" movement and remains vital today. I think most architects agree that NU brought welcome attention to mixed-use, walkable communities and the importance of the street. But it has a major blind spot when it comes to design, as this article notes: landscape urbanism vs. new urbanism

Preservation as a danger?

Rem Koolhaas has always been one to scream "fire" in the crowded theatre of architecture. His provocations are usually interesting and this one is no different. Personally I think the issue is more complex in the new cities of the sunbelt, which tend to be history-starved. That said, the impulse that everything old is worth preserving by default is due some serious scrutiny. The New Museum in NYC is a perfect venue for this discussion.

Vegas Lounge Act

One of our recent projects was the design of a prototype first-class lounge. The lounge is intended for multi-carrier access therefore it is not branded for a specific airline. The first adaptation of the prototype will be at McCarran Airport in Las Vegas; several other locations around the country are expected to follow.

The Speckled Egg

I've been working with Clay Greenberg, a renowned chef in Nashville, on his new restaurant, The Speckled Egg. Clay is committed to a seasonal "locavore" menu and has established relationships with a number of regional artisanal farms. It should be an interesting addition to Nashville's impressive food scene.
